Announcements:. Joe Ruospo announced that there will be no morning meeting next week. Instead, we hope everyone will be able to attend our scrumptious and fun-filled dinner meeting at Tashua Knolls in Trumbull on Friday evening, June 22, 2001. Come and honor our outgoing President, Joe Ruospo, for the great job he has done during the past year. Join us in a cheer and a handshake for incoming President Ted Merritt. Cocktails and appetizers begin at 6:30PM, with dinner following at 7:30PM. Ted will be handing out detention slips and extra homework assignments for those who are late or absent without a note from their parents. Call Jayne Bolton now, if you forgot to send in your reservation.

Bill Zeidenberg announced that our “Adopt a Ramp” is almost complete, and just waiting for the sign installation. It is a classy tribute to our Town and our Club. Our site is on the esplanade at the corner of Daniels Farm Road and Stroebel Road

Joe Ruospo stated how proud he was to see fellow Rotarians on the Board of the YMCA, and to observe the acknowledgment plaque for erecting the YMCA Pavilion in 1994. By the way, our club also donated the Pavilion at Twin Brooks Park. Joe stated that much unfinished business and yearly progress was discussed at the Board Meeting, with our overall efforts being very impressive indeed.

We will host an exchange student this year, and are still looking for families that can host the incoming female student for several months each. The country of origin and name of the student has not yet been determined. Call Jayne Bolton if you would like first-hand information from a generous family who has hosted a foreign student recently.

Happy/sad Dollars: Joe Ruospo gave a happy five dollars for the excellent contributions made by many Rotarians during the past week. Over 20 members were at the last Board Meeting. Joe coached the Kennedy Center sponsored soccer team at the Special Olympics. Joe was also present at the Trumbull-Lakewood YMCA Recognition Dinner when our gift of $2,000.00 for summer camp scholarships was acknowledged. Lynn Fontana gave a happy two dollars for Trumbull High School graduation, and for her niece. Lynn’s niece is a student at Boston College who recently completed a semester of study at Oxford University in England with an “A” average. Ray Baldwin gave a happy dollar for Tom Galla’s mother who was recently released from Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York. Jim Lang gave a happy dollar for his trip to Haiti, where he had a great time, in spite of the poor living and working conditions there. Our donation of used baseball caps was very popular with the youngsters who received them. Dawn Dalrymple gave a happy dollar to be a part of our great club and for the YMCA being blessed with Joe Ruospo’s presence at their recognition dinner. Barry Diamond gave a happy dollar for the assistance our club provided to Trumbull’s Own Chamber of Commerce during  the past year.

Birthdays and Anniversaries:  None were announced at the meeting.

Program: Max Goree, the General Manager of Great River Golf Club, gave an informative presentation regarding the development of the club, it’s remarkable sudden popularity, and their plans for the future. A brief tour of the restaurant and pro shop followed. Many members were tempted to stay and play golf, shop, or continue eating, but most of us straggled out with a mental note to return soon. Among other things, Max said:

1.     The Club is owned by the Lenoci and Shennel families of Fairfield, CT.

2.     Great River has been  nominated as one of the best new Golf Clubs in the country.

3.     In only ten weeks of operation, sell-outs are being achieved.

4.     Approximately 12 years ago, the owners began to buy up property along the Housatonic river in Milford for the purpose of creating the Club, as well as for potential housing developments.

5.     The Club has 155 acres of river-front property and a 30,000 square foot custom-designed clubhouse.

6.     The grass on the golf course is in its third year of growing, and in excellent condition.

7.     The Club will always remain public, but members can call for reservations one week before the public can. Yearly memberships allow for unlimited golf.

8.     The restaurant is open from 6AM to 10PM, every day. The food is delicious and the prices are reasonable.

9.     Frank Metrusky stated that he had a great party for his wife at the club, commenting on the service and food quality.

10. There are no plans to build tennis courts, swimming pools or boat slips. Great River will remain strictly a golfing club.

11. Indoor golf training is available.

After the tour, Ron Lesko asked if our members would consider moving our golf tournament to Great River. After a brief discussion, it was decided to remain at Tashua Knolls this year. We will consider utilizing Great River for some sort of event, possibly golf, in the future.

Raffle:  Dave Dunn and Preston Merritt drew for $311.00, with no winner selected.
