The Rotary Club of Trumbull Club No. 6755, District 7980, Region 1 September 28, 2001 meeting
President-elect Mike Redgate called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Jack Quinlan said the invocation. Steve Hodson led us in singing “Edelweiss”.
Attendance: 34 of 63 members attended. Frank Metrusky -10- Eight for attending an eight hour seminar regarding Property and Casualty Insurance presented at the Helen Plumb Building, thanks to Former Rotarian Paul Plouffe, ServiceMaster, and Cathy Seymour, and two for the Yankees clinching the pennant again. Dick Stutz -1- for Frank Metrusky winning the Wright Brothers Memorial Award. Sheryl Shaughnessey -1- for seeing Donna Warner at our meeting. Rose Marie Spatafore -1- One for the continual support she has received regarding the tragedy from people around the world. Ray Baldwin -1- because Dick Stutz flew with the Wright Brothers. Dick Stein -2- for a great trip to Colorado. Thelma Hoyt -1- for Ray Baldwin. Steve Hodson -1- for the great surge by the New York Mets, and for the sincere spirit displayed by our major league baseball players. Steve Jakab -1- matching dollar for Steve Hodson’s comments. Jim Lang -1- for Gustave Whitehead, whom Jim believes flew before the Wright Brothers, but not before Dick Stutz. Mike Rappa -2- for the Saint Catherine of Sienna Golf Tournament, and one for all the help he received from 5 club members who helped pack over a ton of books stored at his warehouse that are part of our International Assistance program. Mike was assisted by Jim Bardon, Tom Heaney, Len Germano, Bob Matthews and Joe Ruospo. Frank Metrusky -1- for Mike Rappa’s haircut. Preston Merritt -1- for Joe Ruospo playing great golf in St. Catherine’s Golf Tournament. Tom Galla –1- for Joe Ruospo being wished happy birthday by John LaBarca during John’s morning radio show on WICC. Sheryl Shaughnessey -1- for the presence of Mike Redgate’s lovely young daughter at our meeting, for our flag, and for our soothing rendition of “Edelweiss”.
Birthdays and Anniversaries: The club sang “Happy Anniversary” to Bev and Chuck Cambras and “Happy Birthday” to Joe Ruospo and Ray Baldwin.
Committee Updates and Announcements:
Tom Galla passed around a sign-up sheet for our Golf Tournament to be held on Monday October 8, 2001, which is Columbus Day. We are now doing well. Joe Ruospo announced that the Norm Parsells luncheon will be Tuesday November 13th, at the Holiday Inn in Bridgeport. Please save the date and attend. Ted Merritt announced that the District Relief Fund will be discussed at the next Board meeting, which has been moved to October 10th, 2001. Ted also announced that we will discuss the upcoming political debate, as well as the breakfast issue for the debate, at the board meeting. We will also discuss the location of our Holiday Party at the next board Meeting. The Devon Club is celebrating their thirty-fifth anniversary soon, and we need a representative to attend their dinner. Ray Baldwin volunteered to present awards on behalf of our club at the “Battle of The Bands”, held at Trumbull High School on September 29th. Dick Stein wants everyone to know that Dan Calloway regrets not being able to attend meetings lately. Dan has been very busy caring for his mother-in-law who is suffering from a terminal illness. Dale Seymour wants everyone to know that Bob Schwartz sends his regards and wants everyone to know that his health has been improving, and that he is now back to regular patrol duty at the Police Department. He hopes to be able to stop by a meeting soon.
Program:. Mike Redgate introduced our Club Member speaker Thelma Hoyt who discussed the International Aspects of Rotary. Among other things, Thelma said: 1. Phil Lane, Dick Stein and Keith Gatling are also on her International Service committee. 2. Rotary was a founder of the United Nations. 3. Many foreign countries, such as Sweden, have many very active Rotary Clubs. 4. There are five building blocks of Rotary’s International Service Program. a. Special international observances and events. b. International meetings. c. Educational and cultural activities d. Rotary Foundation e. World Community Service Thelma then introduced guest speaker Donna Warner of the Naugatuck Club. Donna participated in two Rotary International programs. She was a journalism student at the University of Warwick in Coventry England in 1987 and 1988. In 1998 she traveled to Sweden for one month as part of the GSE team, and spoke enthusiastically of her experiences.
Raffle: Dale Seymour and Bob Braun drew for $29, with no winning ticket selected.
