The Rotary Club of Trumbull

October 19, 2001 meeting

 

          President-elect Mike Redgate called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Jack Quinlan said the invocation. Steve Hodson led us in singing  “As Morning Breaks”.

Attendance:  39 of 64 members attended. Marjorie Anctil, Ray Baldwin Jr., James Bardon, Gregory Bivona, Jayne Bolton, Doreen Boutote, Jackie Carlino, Gary Cioffi, Joan Farley, Lynn Fontana, Keith Gatling, Tom Heaney, Steve Hodson, Thelma Hoyt, Steve Jakab, Phil Lane, Ronald Lesko, John Makar, John McBride, Ian McMillan, Preston Merritt, Ted Merritt, Frank Metrusky, Jack Quinlan, Michael Rappa, Michael Redgate, John Rosati, Joe Ruospo, Russell Schwartz, Dale Seymour, Paul Squillace, Dick Stein, Dick Stutz, Stephen Taylor, George Voynick, William Zeidenberg

Guests: Mark Fries of the Bridgeport Club, and prospective member Jonathan Baron, a guest of Jim Lang, attending his third meeting.

Happy Dollars:

Ron Lesko -1- because guest Jonathan Baron looks younger than Michael Redgate.

Dale Seymour -10- Five for the number of playoff games the Yankees have won enroute to the American League Pennant, and five for attending his 40th High School Reunion in Springfield, New Jersey, without looking like the oldest classmate there.

Frank Metrusky -1- For being able to repeat this famous New York Yankee quote “The team that owns the history of baseball just wrote another chapter”

Ray Baldwin -1- because Mike Rappa has obtained a proper “Business Man’s” haircut.

Thelma Hoyt -1- for trying to start a small Rotary singing group.

Mike Rappa -1- for the successful Winterfest meeting at his home (more volunteers are needed) and because he  is looking for more hair gel.

Preston Merritt -1- for missing last week’s meeting because he was at the Yankees game.

John Rosati -1- because the Spokes club raised $800.00 for the September 11th victims’ fund.

Birthdays and Anniversaries:  None were announced

Committee Updates and Announcements:

John Rosati announced that the NEOA speaker will be at Hillcrest School on Thursday, 10/24/01 . He also announced that help will be needed at Haunted Happening on Friday October 26th at 7:00PM.

Joe Ruospo announced that the Norm Parsells luncheon will be Tuesday, November 13th, at the Holiday Inn in Bridgeport. Please save the date and attend. Len Germano will be receiving an award at the luncheon, and there will be no regular Friday meeting that week.

Thelma Hoyt announced that Mark Fries had been presented with a check for $1,000.00 from our club for the Honduras help program. Funds have also been contributed from other clubs.

Mark Fries expressed his thanks for the donation and said he is leaving soon for Honduras. The relief project is being coordinated by the Nicoian, Honduras Rotary Club and by the Minister of Agriculture.

Dick Stutz expressed continued confidence in the FAA. He advised that there is a story about the FAA’s quick response to the September 11th hijackings on the New York Times website “NYTIMES.com”.

Minutes of the October 10th Board Meeting Notes - were presented by Secretary Bill Zeidenberg

1.     Arrangements for travel discounts to the Rotary Convention in Spain have been made by Club Member Rose Marie Spatafore. The sale of travel packages for other area Rotarians will also serve as a fund-raiser for our club.

2.     A new-member brochure is being developed

3.     The NEOA speaker is being paid a stipend of $500.00 by our club.

4.     $175.00 will be allocated for a Past Presidents’ Plaque.

5.     Our meeting on October 26th will include a debate between First Selectman Ken Halaby and his challenger, club member Ray Baldwin.

6.     Next week’s breakfast contributions will be given to the district fund for hunger relief.

7.     A letter has been sent to Trumbull Superintendent of Schools Ralph Iassogna for his professional response to the needs of students after the September 11th disaster.

8.     We will be collecting used cell phones that will be converted to 911 use for Senior Citizens.

9.     Our club has a balance of $23,600.00 in the treasury.

10. Some members still have not paid their dues.

11. December 7th, 2001 is a possible date for an appearance by Congressional Representative Christopher Shays.

12. Winterfest will be held on 2/3/02. We need more corporate sponsors.

13. Try to recruit more new members. Classification rules have been changed to allow up to five members from each classification.

14. A new club directory is being assembled, as well as a small pocket-size version.

15. Our club’s contribution to the District September 11th relief fund was $500.00.

16. Our exchange student has switched host families, due to a language problem.

Program:. Lynn Fontana introduced our new Club Member and speaker, Dr. Gary Cialfi,  the Principle of Trumbull High School. Among other things, Gary said:

1.     THS is a unique and energetic hub of the community.

2.     The school climate should be one of freedom with responsibility.

3.     Attempts are being made to make the transition from middle school to high school smoother, with less “culture shock”.

4.     New course offerings will reflect a variety of interests.

5.     There will be new measurements of achievement tied more closely to school goals.

6.     A new, stronger mission statement will be developed.

7.     Students should learn to become lifetime leaders.

Raffle:  Thelma Hoyt and Jayne Bolton drew for $152.00, with no winning ticket selected.

October 25      NEOA program about designer drugs will be presented at Hillcrest School.

October 26      8:00AM Debate between Ken Halaby and Ray Baldwin, following our                         meeting.
