The Rotary Club of Trumbull

Club No. 6755, District 7980, Region 1

President-elect Mike Redgate called the meeting to order and led the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag. Jack Quinlan said the invocation. Steve Hodson led us in singing  “My Country Tis of Thee”.

Attendance:  40 of 64 members attended. Guests: Tom Lee of the Fairfield Club.

Due to our Debate forum, only an abbreviated meeting was held. There were no Happy/sad dollars, Birthdays and Anniversaries, Committee reports and announcements or raffle. Ted Merritt served as moderator for a spirited one hour debate between incumbent First Selectman Ken Halaby and his challenger, Club Member Ray Baldwin. We enjoyed a good turnout of members and guests from the community. Over $400.00 was collected for the Rotary Hunger Drive thanks to the generosity of all in attendance. The Marriot donated a larger room and the continental breakfast.

The following two announcements are from Thelma Hoyt

(1) The Rotary Club of Trumbull is starting an informal singing group. We'll perform at club events. Who knows, if we get really good, the next stop may be Madison Square   Garden. Or Carnegie Hall. At any rate, Trumbull Rotarians who think they may be interested in being part of the singing group are invited to a brief meeting after the regular meeting on Friday, Nov. 2. This meeting will be exploratory. Attending will not constitute a commitment. Members who have indicated an interested so far are Ted Merritt, Steve Jakab, and Thelma Hoyt.

(2) Deadline for applications for the Group Study Exchange (GSE) teams have been extended, due to the 911 tragedy. In April, District 7980 will send two teams out: one to Brazil, the other team to the countries of Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua and El Salvador.  Rotarians who have been on GSE teams report that it is a very rich experience.

The teams consist of one team leader who must be a Rotarian, and five business people who may not be Rotarians (their qualifications: between the ages of 25-40, US citizen, employed for at least two years in their current profession, and enthusiastic about their vocation). The team leader qualifications are: must be an active, responsible, healthy Rotarian with good people skills and a thirst for adventure. Teams spend a month in the foreign country, visiting local Rotary clubs and learning about business and the local culture. For six months prior to their trip, they meet weekly to study the country they will visit. Please see Thelma Hoyt for further information.

Team members will be the guests of local Rotary Clubs, living with Rotarian families.
