The Celebrity Breakfast originally scheduled for December 7th has been switched to January 11th, 2002. Richard Blumenthal, the Attorney General for Connecticut will still be our speaker. Phil Lane is the chairman of this event. Everyone is again reminded to please wear your Rotary pin to all meetings and other Rotary functions. Our Holiday Party will be held at Vazzy’s on December 15th, so please save the date. Our slate of officers for the upcoming year were elected as follows: President Michael Redgate Vice President Phil Lane President Elect Mike Rappa Treasurer Bev Cambras Secretary Dale Seymour Program: Dave Wilson introduced our guest speaker Lt. Bob Tolomeo, Commander of the Connecticut State Police Troop G at Bridgeport, CT. Troop G is the largest troop in the state. Bob is a Rotarian who began his law enforcement career at the Trumbull Police Department. Bob distributed two informative handouts and said, among other things, the following: 1. There have been many responses by Troop G to calls about suspected anthrax, but no visible findings. 2. Several real pipe bombs were found under the Stratford/Milford bridge, but they were not set to detonate the bridge. 3. Workplace Violence includes schools, which is the workplace for teachers. Everyone must be much more vigilant and report suspicious activity to the proper authorities, not ignore it. 4. The new law enforcement policy regarding “active school shooters” is to shoot the assailant as soon as a clear shot is available, rather than waiting for the situation to resolve itself. 5. An incident in Plymouth, CT on 11/7/01, in which a deranged man was shot and killed by the State Police illustrates the danger of such incidents. Non-lethal methods failed to stop the charging man, who had just murdered a two year old child. 6. Smallpox can become a bigger threat than anthrax. 7. United States-based hate groups can use Taliban terror to mask their unlawful activity in our country. 8. The new State Police helicopter has a 300 mile range and a top speed of 165 mph. It can track stolen vehicles and search for missing people, even at night with its bright spotlight, and assist in bringing vehicle chases to a rapid conclusion. 9. Troop G is staffed by 80 personnel and patrols I-95 from the New York state line to exit 56. Patrols also include the Merritt Parkway and sections of Routes 8 and 25. Over 700 motor vehicle accidents per month are investigated and a huge number of 911 calls are answered by the troop. Raffle: Barry Diamond and Tom Galla drew for $232.00 with no winner selected.
