Barry Diamond had happy dollars for the  Trumbull's Own Chamber of Commerce symposium on security for businesses to be held Wed. March 20 from 6-9 PM. Security is a hot topic these days. The Board sent a donation to Swim Across the Sound in her memory. Michael Redgate gave happy dollars--his adorable little daughter Annika had medical tests for just about everything, and Mike says, "She's just small!"

Club Business:       ANNUAL CARNIVAL

Preston Merritt reported on our Annual Carnival which will take place April 17-21. The Board discussed taking over the food selling, since we could make several thousand on this. Preston said working on this project is also a good opportunity to get to know each other. We need people to work selling food and tickets.

people we're sending to Central America, and those coming in from Central America to spend a month in Connecticut. Our club  should be represented at this GSE event, which is our District's main international activity. Tickets are $15. Reservations are due not later than March 30. Call Brian Barrett at (203)264-7983 or e-mail <blbarrett1@earthlink.net>

The GSE (Group Study Exchange) Barn Dance will be held on Sat., April 27 from 2-9 PM at the Kokomiko Miniature Horse Farm in Woodbury. This makes for a pleasant family day, good for children of about age four and up through teen-agers. The music is by a terrific country band, and the square dancing requires no experience. It's just plain fun. You can see the little horses, too. It's a way for Rotarians in our district to welcome incoming GSE team members from other countries. An extra added attraction---the teams from Central America and Brazil joined by our GSE team members will play a  soccer game. Admission for the entire day is $7.50 for adults; $3.50 for children 4-10, plus a pot-luck dinner contributton (please call Linda Barrett at (203)264-7983) to discuss what to bring). Reservations are due no later than April 20. Call (203)264-7983 for info, or go to <wildwoman01@earthlink.net>

BIKE--A-THON

John Rosati said we need to raise $2,500 and will combine this event with the sunset run.

JAZZ FESTIVAL in TRUMBULL!

Ray Baldwin said that a Jazz Festival will be held in August. Benefactors for the first year

will be half Rotary, and half Swim Across the Sound. Eventually, the festival will be a  2 or 3

day event.

OPEN INVITATION

all of them to attend our next Board meeting on Wed., April 3 at 7 PM at the Marriott.

PROGRAM

Jack Quinlan introduced an old friend of his, Dr. C. P. Karazulas who is chief forensic odontologist, and an expert witness with the States Attorney's office. He has been working for 27 years as an executive officer with noted forensic physician Dr. Henry Lee. His presentation was a facinating account of how crimes, especially murders, are solved by forensics.

Dr. Karazulas said he has been involved in 400  "cold cases." He told of a case he worked on for 11 years before solving it to the point where credible evidence could be introduced in court that would leave the killer no way to extricate himself from the truth of his hideous deed (actually, this killer is a serial killer, thought to have murdered more than 50 women). Dr. Karazulas demonstrated with slides how he proved that the killer is a necrophile.  A necrophile usually strangles his victim, and the slides showed the telltale signs of a killer with this pathological behavior. This case is going to be an exhibit at the Smithsonian because it represents the first time that a murder case was solved with new techniques developed by a scientist from MIT. The technology allows a shadow to be removed from a photo, revealing as many as 255 levels beyond what the naked eye can see.  The technique has many uses in  criminal work.

Dr. Karazulas teaches at the Connecticut Police Academy and has a dental practice on Park Ave., Bridgeport. Needless to say, after working over 27 years in forensics, many of them with Dr. Henry Lee,  he had lots of interesting anecdotes to tell, including his theory on the O.J. Simpson case. We could have kept him there for hours!
