Rotary is all about Service

Rotarians are committed to service above self. They participate in community service to improve life in the Trumbull community and meeting community needs. Rotarians participate in club service by attending meetings and serving on a variety of committees for fundraising, service and membership. Rotarians also participate in International service to promote understanding, goodwill and peace.

Paul Harris founded Rotary International in Chicago in 1905. Since then, Rotary International has grown to more than 27,500 clubs worldwide. The Rotary Club of Trumbull is 75 members strong, and meets weekly on Friday mornings at 7:30 a.m. at Trumbull Public Library.
For more information on the Rotary Club of Trumbull consider attending a Friday morning meeting at the Trumbull Public Library at 7:30 a.m.

2011-12 Youth Exchange Student Vivi Gomes

Gomes

Our club Youth Exchange student from Brazil, Vvi Gomes (promounced Vee'Vee Go'mez) introduced her country and her sending club in a multimedia presentation on Friday, October 7. Vivvi arrived in the USA in late August and will stay through June 2012. She is a high school student and visits on an Academic Visa as part of Rotary's Youth Exchange program. During her 10-month stay in the USA, Vivi stays with local families.

Rotary invented Youth Exchange and continues to be the least expensive progam because so much of the work is done by volunteers. Because clubs of community leaders manage the program it also has the best local support. If you know a high school student who is interested in an exciting year of study abroad, contact Youth Exchange Officer Sue Horton at the Trumbul Library Main Branch.

Trumbull's "Mr Rotary" leaves a great legacy

Passing of the gavel

(From the Redgate-Hennessy web site with some additions)

Leonard J. Germano, of Trumbull, CT, passed away peacefully on August, 29, 2011 at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Born on November 17, 1935, he was the son of the late Dominic and Rose Germano, and is survived by his loving family: his wife Ann, his daughter Amy and her husband Shin, all of Trumbull, and his daughter Mary Ellen of Newtown; his cousins and their families: Joseph DeRosa of Stamford (who was like a brother to him), Rosemarie Quaranta of Fairfield, Rose (Honey) Profetto of Florida, and Becky Boccuzzi of Orange; his in-laws the McGann families of MA and CO; as well as many friends.

Len joined Rotary in January of 1992 with a classification of Adult Education. He served as club President 1998-99, club Treasurer from 2003, club Executive Secretary from 2004. All the members, especially club presidents, counted on Len for clear guidance He was the go-to guy for just about everything. His leadership style was to set an example and then invite others to join him.

The District (7980) appointed him to serve as Assistant Governor from 2001-2004 and as District Secretary from 2001-2008 (Many district leaders consider this job as the most challenging in the district.) Len also served as Conference Registrar for several years between 2003 and 2007, and on other committees including Disaster Relief, District Assembly, District Handbook, PolioPlus, STRIVE and the Significant Achievement Awards.

Len also served the club as Foundation co-chair and was a Paul Harris Fellow, Major donor, and member of the Paul Harris Society.

He grew up in Stamford and received his undergrad and graduate degrees from the University of Bridgeport. An educator at heart, he spent his entire career in the Trumbull Public School system – first as a teacher, then Coordinator of Distributive Education, Assistant Principal, “C” House Principal, Associate Principal, and Director of Continuing Education. At Trumbull HS he was a Cross Country and Track Coach, the first Yearbook Advisor, and a member of the Trumbull Boosters Club. Always involved in service organizations, he served as President of the Trumbull Exchange Club; and was Treasurer of the Trumbull Rotary Club at the time of his death, after previously serving as President and District Assistant Governor. He loved all sports, particularly H.S., and he enjoyed his affiliation with the F.C.I.A.C. Board of Directors as a League Advisor and Retired Coaches Coordinator.

Leonard is remembered by Teachers, Rotarians, and former students as a mentor who guided them through their early years. He loved fixing things, and solving problems. He will be greatly missed, and fondly remembered, by his family and his many, many friends.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make contributions in his memory to: the American Cancer Society, to be used for research (www.cancer.org); or to the South Asia Pure Water Initiative, Inc. (www.sapwii.org), a Rotary project dear to his heart that provides water purifiers for rural villages in India. To send online condolences please visit www.redgatehennessy.com
